These rules govern the proper use of the Oil Slickers Society International flag and the expected conduct of all members when the flag is present or when representing the organization. The rules exist to protect the dignity of the flag, preserve the reputation of OSSi, and ensure every display reflects our shared values of respect, unity, and positive fellowship.
1. Flag Description
The official flag of the Oil Slickers Society International is orange (#f87c26), best described as somewhere between persimmon and vermilion. It is a warm, friendly autumn color and not a caution orange.
- The standard design is a solid orange field (or the approved OSSi emblem centered on an orange field) in the official proportions and materials approved by the International Council.
- Special exceptions to color, design, or materials are permitted only by unanimous approval of the International Council and are reserved for rare commemorative, international, or ceremonial purposes. Unauthorized variations are strictly prohibited.
2. General Respect for the Flag
- Treat the flag with dignity at all times. It must never touch dirty or unclean surfaces.
- The flag must not be used as clothing, a table cover, drape, or for any decorative or mechanical purpose that diminishes its status.
- Do not abuse, deface, mutilate, or otherwise desecrate the flag.
- When the flag becomes worn or faded beyond presentable condition, it may be retired through a ritualistic social event.
3. Display and Location Rules
- The flag may be flown or displayed by any member at sanctioned chapter gatherings, member-owned or member-hosted venues, and other locations that wish to be a part of OSSi culture and our community.
- The flag must never be placed in controversial, political, protest, or divisive locations. This includes (but is not limited to) political rallies, demonstrations, sites of civil unrest, venues associated with illegal activity, or any setting where its presence could reasonably link OSSi to controversy or negative public perception.
- When displayed alongside other flags, the Oil Slickers flag follows standard international flag protocol (positioned to the observer’s right of the host nation’s flag, or below in an equal or subordinate position as appropriate).
- Indoor displays must be hung flat or on a pole with proper lighting and not hidden behind objects. Display it proudly.
4. Conduct Rules When Representing OSSi Under the Flag
Any member present at an event or location where the Oil Slickers flag is displayed is automatically considered an official representative of OSSi. The following conduct standards are mandatory:
- Conduct yourself with courtesy, professionalism, and respect toward all individuals, fellow members, guests, and the public.
- Refrain from any illegal activity, disorderly behavior, excessive intoxication, or actions that could bring OSSi into disrepute.
- Do not use the flag, OSSi name, or your membership to endorse political parties, candidates, or divisive causes unless the International Council has issued prior written approval.
- Promote OSSi values of fellowship, safety, and good citizenship at all times. Harassment, discrimination, or harsh/offensive language directed at any person is prohibited.
- Exercise personal responsibility for safety: follow all applicable traffic, venue, and event safety rules, and intervene appropriately if another member’s behavior risks violating these rules.
- Members must not engage in commercial solicitation or personal profit-seeking under the flag without council approval.
5. Enforcement
- All members are personally responsible for knowing and upholding these rules.
- Violations will be reviewed by chapter leadership and, if necessary, referred to the International Council.
- Penalties may include formal warning, temporary suspension of membership privileges, or permanent expulsion from OSSi.
- Any member witnessing misuse of the flag or violations of conduct rules must report it promptly to their chapter president or the International Council.
These rules are effective immediately and apply to every member, chapter, and affiliate worldwide. They reflect the pride we all share in the Oil Slickers Society International and our commitment to representing it with honor. Questions or requests for clarification should be directed to the International Council.
Fly the orange with pride... and with responsibility.
